Great old combat lid Bob. Hard to tell from the pics when the white paint was added, looks to have been done many years ago. You would think though if period painted and removed the owner would have finished the job as the remaining white would have stuck out like a sore thumb in spring.
I wouldn't treat the leather personally, although this is always a controversial subject as what's worse for future collectors and historians, a treated liner or no liner in another 50 years?
        Regards, Bill

          Thanks Bill,
glad you like the lid,yes i can't understand why that bit of paint was left when all the rest was removed, still all the reissue paint is present and that's what matters.
I think with any sort of restoration you need some confidence in your own ability and a common sense approach,if you don't have it then don't touch it!...

          Regards

          Bob

IMO, I would treat the leather. Is preservation/conservation a bad thing with these historical items ??? I think its a little naive to think we can keep these things in an " as found " state don't you think ?

Just had a look with a loupe while the sun was shinning ,the decals appear to still be under the paint, definitely an Army helmet ...

It is a hard one Martin, on one hand I think ' the thing has lasted for 70 years without anything but time changing it's state' but on the other hand all that future collectors will have will be a whole lot of shells with liner bands
                  Regards, Bill
