Are SS helmets rare?

I'd like opinions from long time collectors on this question. After looking at quite a few dealers' websites, I see a lot of SS helmets for sale. One dealer has about a dozen helmets listed from $7000 to $25,000. Explain to a SS helmet novice, How rare are these really?

Only real ones are rare! No, seriously the demand for the surviving SS helmets is such that they command high prices. Some dealer prices can be higher and there are many factors that determine value including model and condition. Regards Bill

I actually don't think they're rare at all. The reasoning for not seeing many on the market is simple, they're all currently in collection. Some collectors own hundreds in fact.
Now there are variants which are actually rare, some more than others but that's a different story all together.

Hundreds??? How many do you have mate? Doug B Daryl P Walter B all have more than you can poke a stick at but all amazingly rare and special in their own way. They are all common on the ground till you actually want to add one to your collection. Then the $ factor dictates the desire and the rarity.. Johnno.

Indeed, from minty SS DD to the more exotic types, if the funds are nolimt/problem and you know who to ask/buy...or better yet know the helmet and its proven originality....and chain of owners/collectors...is much better.

Most of the rare and exoctic SS helmets are know to the collecting comunity and in most cases also the current owner, with the little surprise from time to time of a woodwork find by a collector or even dealers. But as we all know, we are just temporary custodians of these historical pieces, and as such, these exact same pieces change hands quite often.....some more than others.

For example, right now my SS dream helmet...a black DD RZM-SS helmet have come to the market again, think the last time I saw it for sale was about 10/12 years ago, a SUPERB specimen that I would love to own.....but the price tag do not permit so!!!!!!

So as Glenn very well said, if you have the funds, know your stuff around the SS helmet jungle and are patient...you can get almost any SS helmet you can think so.....my very personal view and opinion of course.

You have good taste, my dream helmet, as well.

I've seen it myself. Good looking helmet and priced right, IMO.
