    M42 SD Heer to restore

    Hi guys,
here is my latest pick up from the States. A SD Heer m42 CKL.... i think?,will be on its way to me tomorrow..
Helmet has a fairly good decal with a fair bit of light surface rust, complete liner band but with missing leather and chin strap, obviously a casualty of bad storage.
I have a 43 dated chin strap and leather to go in this helm in my spares box.
Would you just give the exterior a good shot of WD40 with a firm brush and then just wipe of with a lint free cloth or something more severe?,oxalic perhaps

Here are a couple of 3 pics for your comments

The WD rub is more than sufficient.

Hello Bob I'd leave it alone Wd will make it shine for awhile big deal, if your hell bent ballistol products may have something but man I like it as is. save the WD for your car distributor cap. lol!
In a world where people want everything to look nice this helm looks refreshingly war time from what I see imo.

                Hi Eric,
Many thanks for time to reply,i totally understand your comments & sentiments Mate.I probably won't have it in hand until the end of next week,if past experiences are anything to go by to determine condition correctly. I actually did a m42 DD combat police helmet with WD40 that was not a bad as this one and to be fair it came out great.
Put it like this, if i dropped down dead...heaven forbid, the collection would be sold off in a heart beat,so i'd rather gauge some opinions on restoration and do it properly than let someone get there hands on it and totally ruin it

                Best Wishes
                Bob

Nice helmet mate. I would just give it a slight wipe over with an oily rag, mineral engine oil or something

Yes Bob, hope you are well ! Are you off to Normandy by any chance ?

WD40 is great stuff, use it on my cars and bikes all the time, but makes me a little nervous putting it on helmets. Its full of chemicals and I think it contains petroleum products so may not do the paint any good over time. Mineral oil should not do the paint any harm in the long run, just my opinion of course. Could maybe just leave as it is, as long as its kept dry it should not get any worse ?

                        Hi Martin,

I think WD40 is ok,as i said i used it before on a police helmet and it looks great, you can see that helmet in "my collections" thread.

                        Cheers

To be honest, I have no idea what I'm doing this year and will have to wing it...

I think WD40 is fine; as I already stated, I used it on a police helmet and it looks wonderful; you can see the helmet in the "my collections" section.
