Winter camo remains or ?

Got this m42 in today. It has a strange white layer on the top of the helmet. The boundary of this area look very nice and it also looks like the white layer on the remaining part of the helmet wash wiped off or removed with some kind of cleaning agent. Some of the lower parts of the helmet still has white remains as so does the rivets. The rusty areas have appeared after the white paint was applied.
So question is if this old be remains of whitewash or something else.

I can’t really see much remnants of a winter camo, normally see remains around the vent holes
Has maybe picked up some overspray post war ? Looks like someone has got paint on it and tried to wipe it off with a dirty cloth

EDIT:
Can also see thumb prints in white paint, I think someone has been decorating and got paint on it, has tried to clean it off with a turps rag hence the residue left behind
