Stamps in helmet - is it german????

Dear Sirs

A friend of mine has - what we think is - a German helmet.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o></o>

It is stamped "ET66" on the left of the inside, and "17/9" or "1779" on the back of the inside.<o></o>

Is this enough information for you experts to decide what helmet it is?<o></o>

ET is the manufacturer

66 is the shell size

As Philip mentioned, ET is the maker's code; Eisenhuttenwerke, located in Thale and 66 is the circumference of the shell in cm's. The number at the rear (1779) is a reference number for the batch lot of steel used to produce the shell.

If you are interested in German helmets from a collector's standpoint I would suggest that you purchase Ludwig Baer's "History of the German Steel Helmet 1916 -1945". It describes all the information you need.

Seems like we have a WWII helmet. Unfortunately it has been painted black, and the strap has been refitted. So some refurbishing must happen before the helmet is restored.
