What are they? M-36 Soviet helmets? There seems to be one German M-16 among the pile...

Looks like a large majority of these are in fact M16, M18 German helmets!!!

I suppose the other interesting question would be..... how did they get there in the first place. It would be rather odd that the Russian Army of the 80's would take 40 year old helmets to Afghanistan....

If I remember right, Afghanistan gained German helmets in the late 1920's or early 1930's.

Not only are there M16 type helmets in Afghanistan but post WW11 lids as well with no vent holes.

The bulk of the Soviet helmets appear to be the later SSh-68 helmets, but there do seem to be a couple of the SSh-40 shell design in there.

The Afghan Army prior to the Soviet invasion had German helmets and I remember once seeing a picture of the Royal Afghani Guard, where the troops were all dressed in black and black painted helmets (I think they were either M35 or M42) , they surely seemed reincarnated SS honor guards
