Winter helmet Named SS - Roster help?

    Gents,
Picked up this helmet from the estate of a 101st veteran who had his unis, medals, and German souvenirs available. I was wondering if there is any rosters of the 17th SS Grenadier Division as it seems he may have picked up J. Lusius gear along the way.

Thanks in advance for any inputs, advice and information!

    Semper Fi,
    Bob

What's the story on this thing, is the estate selling this bad helmet over and over?

Completely bogus, post war applied winter camo.

I was thinking the same thing. You've got 2 different guys claiming to have sourced this from the estate of the vet? Regardless, this one lacks even a pretense of an intent to fool anybody.

Thanks for all the input on the piece, unless I can get 516th vet online with a ouija board I'll never know for sure how, when and where he got it. The story was good as along with this questionable helmet, his estate also had his jump jacket, dress jacket, Named legion of merit, period AB patches and a couple other Ger. helmets that were stickered. That's what set the hook for me. The other message on the helmet that is out on the forums was the auctioneer looking for opinions on the lid before he ran it thru the hammer. Didn't see that before I went to the auction, oh well... I got a couple other nice things there.

This makes sense Bob. Did the auctioneer state the fact that this helmet got the thumbs down when he posted it?

I can think of several plausible scenarios that can explain this lid....vets son in the 60's is playing war out in the back with dad's souvenir and paints it up Battle of the Bulge style...same could have happened in the 80's with vet's grandson???? Who knows?

Glad you got some other nice things in the collection!

I know these guys know there helmets here, I only have a few. But don't think for one minute that estate auctions and auction houses are not salted with some real stuff and fake brought in and add to move it, and make you think it's all legit . Old. Story short buyer beware. They do it a lot with antique furniture

                          Yep,
I know what you guys mean about the tricks of the trade, the auctioneer puts a hint in the description on any items he is unsure off. He sure didn't put all the boards comments on the sheet Cavet Empeor or something like that!
I stop buying German years back because I hated the feeling of getting snookered, just concentrate on USMC and japanese nowdays. It will be the last German helmet for awhile!

It has always been a dream of mine to see one of these and the JETI. I guess I have to keep looking. J
