Maybe someone thought he wanted to make a more realistic paint job, so started rubbing off the fake paint, then got tired. Tell us more about how you got this helmet from the "old chap".

the felt below the liner leather is wrong colour is it not? Anyway, it is the same as the repro liners that soldier of fortune sell here in the UK!

Looks like a post war German Police helmet ,so the only bit that is pre 1945 is the zinc liner band .Rob.

Yea, it is quite evident that the national shield has been placed over the cammo paint....Couple that with the fact I really dislike the liner as being original to the lid....No idea what the big buff/burn mark is on the top I'd pass

            Greetings Peter,

My opinion is someone repainted this lid and added the national colour. Then someone decided to try to remove the modern paint. Used too strong a paint remover and buggered the whole thing up.

The liner may be added to the shell. But from your pictures it appears to be WWII issue.

            Best regards.

            Jim

I would be interested to hear Matt, Andy or Perry's comments on this lid.

I wouldn't buy it myself, but honestly, with my knowledge of camo's, that means nothing.

Actually, you have all the knowledge you need for this one, and you don't even
have to look at the camo ...

.. I know how it got that skid mark? A couple of British guys dragged a
German upside down on the road across Africa, on his noggin.. They were
kind enough to let him keep his helmet on, at least for the first 300 miles.

Thank you gentlemen for all your comments,It must be pretty plain to all that I am not a helmet person ,I took the "old chap" at his word,he appeared plausable, and me I'm very trusting and stupid, anyway I shall be seeing the "old chap" and I shall be getting my money back, and no I shall not be smacking him in the teeth (theres a good chance they are in a glass at the side of his bed).to me the helmet looked good, more fool me.but to me that is what this forum and others like it are for to warn and help the foolhardy such as myself against all those conmen (young and old) just waiting to rip off those with little experience in the field of collecting.I'm away now to lick my wounds, and yes Steve(thanks for your concern) to rest my testicles,it's been quite a kick in the balls,I'm off for a walk in the country there are lots of barns in the country maybe I can find something there.
                      best wishes Peter

Peter ,we have all been burnt its part of the helmet learning process . Never trust old men/women/sheds /lofts/car boot sales and militaria fairs ,and you should be ok .Rob.

How old was this guy you got the helmet from? If he is old enaugh to be a vet, he must really be an old liar... To bad, that tire rubbing theory sounded interesting.

Well, I agree it's not an authentic piece. A DD M40 is rare - but it shouldn't have a 43' dated liner. As has been said the camo is not correct, both decals are reproductions and the liner itself, I believe is not real either.

Sorry - If it was a vet or "old chap" who sold it to you, often vets bought items post war that they were unable to bring back during their time of service. I've found alot of fakes in the middle of a good lot. The vets usually say they bought those items out of a catalog or at a flea market.

                            Again, not a good piece.
