Early luftwaffe DD drooptail

This helmet had a postwar layer of a thin black paint. Even though theres still some I got a lot of it off but its hard to tell what is what because its original paint seems very dark to? not familiar with this decal or dark paint does it mean anything?

How much more paint should i take off?

The original paint underneath should be blue/grey.
The decal is the first pattern Luftwaffe decal "drooptail"

My advise is to leave it as it is and move your topic to the conservation / save keeping area of this forum and ask for advise.

Paint definitely looks post-war.
