    Civil Police DD question,help please!

    Hello,

I apologise if this is a silly question, but I know nothing at all about helmets!
I have been offered a civil police double decal helmet, from browsing this section of the forum I know that German helmets had markings stamped into the metal,(size, manufacturer etc),but the one I have been offered has a single stamp in it,which is the word 'stahl'.
I know this is the German for steel, but did war time helmets carry this mark on its own without the size & manufacturer stamps?

Apologies again if this seems a silly question!
    All help appreciated.
    Kind regards,
    Andy

    Hi Andy,
I'm almost paraniod to post after the "Auld Hag" saga, since I come from the same country.
    Anyway,
My limited experience and personal collection hasn't come into contact with a helmet stamped "stahl" - it's a new one on me, thats not to say it's wrong.
I have 3 pepperpot vented lids, they have got different marks than the combat shells, but they are in roughly in the same place.(Rear inside nape, and where the left ear is).
I'm guessing the lid you have been offered is the pepperpot type?.(referring to the air-vents in the helmet, the decals will be placed in-between them, lower down.)
Any chance of some photos? I'm not much help here but I am very interested in the outcome......good post and not a silly question in my mind.
    Cheers

            Yes,that's the style of helmet!

I just thought it strange that there was only one stamp inside,as I said,I know nothing about helmets at all!
I want one of these for my German home front collection, and a Luftschutz helmet too!
Most other helmets i've seen on here have a couple of stamps, but I don't recall ever seeing one with 'stahl' stamped inside!

            Kind regards,
            Andy

On page 274 of Baer's book it says on these types of helmets "the word Edelstahl can often be seen stamped under the right side of the apron." I hope this helps.....

                Thanks for the help Andy!

Unfortunately this just has stahl inside.
I think i'll pass on it and wait for one to come on the estand.

                Kind regards,
                Andy

Nice one ......I must read more and stop looking at the pictures

The sentence before that quote from Andy
"The Edelstahl helmet had a distinctly downturned visor and a rather flat crown.

Maybe your going to pass on a good helmet...........?

Andy B, your Helmet, is that an original liner to that helmet? - I have liners in 2 but have been told they are post-war

If the edehlstahl is lightly stamped, you often just see the stahl bit of it! I've got one like that, and it's right as rain!

I'll take another look at it tomorrow, maybe try and get some pics.

He wants £125 for it,what's the going rate for one of these? Both decals are intact, liner and chinstrap present, only concern is quite a bit of paint loss to the top of the helmet.

                          Kind regards,
                          Andy
