I have a similar helmet. Mine is a German M16 helmet with the remains of a M17 liner band riveted to the helmet shell. The place where the chinstrap lugs used to be are now the rusted away remains of an Austrian style chinstrap attachment once again riveted in place.

The outside of the helmet was once a dark slate grey that was painted over in a yellow. There is also a red stripe around the helmet below the lugs and above the skirt. Over the top of this is the remains of a pale green similar to the green used in modern AFV's. It has the remnants of a tri color decal that appears to have been painted onto the helmet and a wehrmacht adler on the other side that is very rough and looks like the paint has attacked the finish. Traces of silver show through in spots when the sun hits it just right, but mostly just shows paint and/or chemical attacks to it. I doubt they ( the decals ) are real anyhow.

Hello again, Jean Pierre. Can you give us a close-up of the decal.
What I see in the far shot really bothers me.

Even from this distance the decal looks incorrect. Any close ups of it?

                    Hi,
Agree that decal looks suspect, I find the fixed chinstrap attatchments, VERY INTERESTING.The extra loop is for carrying the helmet? and looks good and correct with a early gas mask cannister I have that has loops the same size and welded on the same way. - Can you tell what is stamped on to the nape of the shell?
                    Ta,
                    C

                      Helmet

                      Good day to all
I have had this helmet for 35 years and I know the decal is good.Thats not my question my Question is this I was told by the person I got the helmet from that it came from a German officer who was in the cavalary. I know the uniform and officers hat that he still has is that of a German cavalry officer. The helmet was (so he says) attached to a saddle when his father picked these items up in WW2.The helmet liner is riveted to the shell, because of the thick over paint I can not see any markings. But you can see on the helmets inner skirt the extra places to attact the helmet to the saddle.
So do think this helmet is a true cavalry helmet?
I found this helmet in a trunk of other stuff that I put away about 5 years ago so any help with this would be great.

                      Good collecting

No such thing as a special made 'cavalry helmet' existed during ww2, mounted troops just used the standard M35-40 or 42 models or as the case here a transitional type.
The modifications could indeed have been done by the officer to attach it more easily to his saddle(bags)....

ps : as Ken already requested, a close-up of the decal would be nice.

                        Cheers

                          Hi to all,
with regards to the `extra loop` this is the second one that i have seen, the other helmet (which was very rough so i did not purchase it ) but this helmet also came from France (apparently!!). Wish i had brought it for a comparison.
As stated i two would like a better picture of the decal if possible

The extra loops almost look like the fixed bales from an American helmet.
