Good tricks to remove unwanted never helmet paint??

Hello

I have a couple of german helmet that received a overpaint sometime postwar.

Its a m35 and 40 helmet, and can see the original paint in some spots of the helmet. There could maybe also be original decals under the new paint?

Is there a good way to remove the postwar paint without big damage to what is under.

If it is modern acrylic or enamel spray paint goof off and 00 steel wool works well. Use a soft cloth around the decals and work slowly.
