    Double shell Kriegsmarine Helmet

Several years ago I had an opportunity to buy a very unusual Kriegsmarine helmet However I passed as I didn't appreciated it fully at the time

This helmet was a single decal Kriegsmarine helmet that was a moderate large shell size. Picking up the helmet, one would notice that it was much heavier than normal. This was because above the liner band, a dome with the flange removed from a smaller shell had been inserted to effectivly double the shell thickness of the dome.

I was curious if anyone else out there had seen this before? Was this helmet unique or was this a Kriegsmarine thing in which other examples exist.

    Thanks
    Mike

Hi Mike, I too have never seen or heard of that being done before. Perhaps you should have bought it, as it would have made an interesting addition to any helmet collection. I cannot see why anyone would do that post war, so my guess would be it would be a very non regulation period field made conversion?

      Cheers, Ade.

My guess would be to give extra protection, but at the cost of a sore neck. My 0.02
