I have a M40 Q66. The liner is in great condition. So how do I date the liner without damaging it. I don't even know where to look. My understanding is there should be a stamp with the manufacturer and a date in the metal ring.

By the right chinstrap bale on the liner band there will be a date. If you pull gently on the band you should be able to see it. You can roughly date the liners just visually though if you don't want to pull on it. If it is reinforced aluminium with rounded bales it will be 1940/41, non reinforced steel liner band will be 42 onwards. If it's pigskin instead of leather + a steel linerband it will be 44 (I think) onwards. Any pics?

Incidentally I think the liner is made by Werner Zahn.

I did buy it about a month or so ago from estand.
So it sounds like a 41 or 42 stamped strap would work. Does the lot number tell you anything as to the year it was made. It has a lot number of 11408.
Also, does it matter if I get a strap with an aluminum buckle or steel.
