    Gold colored decal on M35?

    Hi Friends

I have had this reissue M35 for several years and always figured
it was a Heer helmet that the decal turned yellow with age.
Now I'm not so sure after seeing others that remain silver with the same age.

    Any thoughts appreciated.

    Thanks
    Ken

            That's a nice looking helmet!

It will be interesting to see more opinions on this one, but I'd say it's more than likely a toned Heer helmet. It's just not as metallic gold as I'd expect for a KM, and there's an unevenness to the color as well.

            Just an opinion.

Yea, If we could get a real tight Macro shot, we could see if there are layers. Does the decal seem to be layered. And, if so, do you have national colors on the other side? It looks KM, buy like "Feld" said it could be toned.

Thanks, fellas, for your comments and opinions.

Stephan, I don't know what you mean by "layers". Not being
a big "helmet guy". There is just a small amount of the national
emblem remaining on the other side so that is not much help.
To be honest, this helmet has had it's share of cigarette smoke,
since it's been in my home. I just can't seem to remember back
when I got this several years ago but it was kind of yellow then to.
This helmet was in a GI trunk untill a few years ago when my friends
uncle past away. I got the trunck and all that was in it. It had some
kind of black phosferous material stuck to the back of it. I used some
chemical and carefully removed the gunk without harming the original
                  surface. A bit of luck.

Here is a closeup such as it is. Darn camera just won't work so well.

Well, as to the layers, the Kreigsmarine Adler (eagle) decal has another layer over the silver eagle to turn it gold. This one does not have the layer, so I must agree with, (who was it?) Feldwebl, that it is indeed a yellowed, Wehrmacht decal. Steller helmet though. Don't feel so bad though. She's a wiener!

Although many here might consder it blasphemy, you could order a product from a company call "Griot's". It's called "Claybar". It's a system where you rub a piece of abrassive-free clay over the decal. You lubricate it with an acid free, greaseless spray. I've had good luck on a couple helmets as it pulls away alot of dirt from the helmet and really makes the original colors pop. Smooth finishes only though. I bought an SD M40 Wehr. It looked almost brown. Then when I "Claybar'ed" it, it removed most of the guck from the surface and now, it is clearly "Pea-green"

                        Stephan

Thanks for the free lesson on the "layer" thing. Actually, I'm
not at all disappointed that it's a heer helmet. It's one of my
favorite helmets. It has the original liner in very good condition
and the officers' name neatly painted in the skirt. The strap was
on it but is dated 1942. I figured that was the year it was reissued.

Seeing it come out of that old trunk after fifty some odd years was
a real thrill. One of those rare moments!

Hmmm. Rather unusual. It could be that this is another decal manufaturer. I'm used to seeing the layered KM decals. Can anyone explain the decal above. If there's one thing for certian about this line of collecting, it's that there's always an opportunity to learn something new.
