The decals look authentic to me, I think maybe some paranoia is setting in with some folk because of the asking price?

      I think you're right.

Here is a close up from the paint inside the helmet. You can see the black dots here as well.
I think these black dots could be something that was added to the paint.
The line you see where they start/stop is from the way the workers add the decal.

      Who wants some more info?

OK, i am out here, i am neither "Sherlock Holmes" nor paranoid! And Nick, you are really thinking these dots came from the factory painting?
But to come to end here, everyone should belive in what he believes in!

          Zam,

I am curious what experience you have with helmets? I went back and looked at your posts and this is one of your first posts in the helmet section, if not your first. (Not that has anything do with knowledge level.) Like I said before I think you are being a little touchy. I only mention the experience because you post a a response about "Champagne" SS decals and two out of four were not even "Champagne" decals and one was not even a "second pattern" SS decal. I find it strange that you would be so offended about the posts when it it seems that you do not have much experience in the topic you started. Just my thoughts. Like I said before welcome to the forum.

            Good points Brian
Zam, welcomehere as well, but please no need to get too touchy here when like u said it is a forum for discussion, u brought the subject up and started the thread to discuss. You gotta take the good with the bad

I handled this helmet in hand as well , nothing to worry about as you can see when you check the close-ups made with the USB microscope , you do need to be familiar with it to make a little bit of sense out of them.

If you look carefully at the decal damage you can clearly see it's made of paper. The supposedly black paint that blew under the masking off paint (as the topic starter so ingeniously stated) is actually a scar that runs across the width of the decal (and a second one almost parallel to the other).

No need for panic at all.

Seriously, why are we even discussing this helmet. It's like hunting down a jaywalker when there's serial killers all free around you...if that makes any sense.

Any ideas what the over spray seems to be , i say " what seems to be " is near the rivet in one of the pictures??

I think it's really sad that a top shelf helmet like this NS SS owned by one of the most prestine helmet collectors is questioned by someone who seems to be a SS helmet noob.

Don't get me wrong, I am for open discussion but in this case, this thread was not necessary IMO. A simple pm would have solved the airbrush scenario.

This thread will put a negative atmosphere on the sale of this helmet.

                    Just my thoughts.

I disagree Peter. This helmet would stand on its own any day of the week. Anyone that would potentially be interested in this helmet would know what they were getting.

For SS helmet nuts like us Brian it stands on its own but for a collector that is looking for only 1 SS DD helmet, he will pass after reading this thread.

I think that Zam's critical thinking and attention to detail should not be frowned upon here. While his worries were disproved this is still a good example of how to examine details very critically.

No I disagree, I've learned a lot about the different decals and particularly how these were produced. As a "one shot at it", one helmet buyer I'd be very satisfied that this is definitely worth the money. Thanks everyone for the input.

I can say that if i had the money, Id snap this one up inna minute!! this thread does not discourage me at all. U have to figure that any SS helmet is always in question, for 10 guys that will bless one and say its real, you will always have the doubters that will not like it, or question something about it. Just how it goes.
