M42 with interesting mystery decal

I posted this thread on another forum. I figured I'd try my luck here...

I found this lid for sale online. The decal (hand painted?) is unlike anything I've ever seen. I know the pictures are REALLY crappy... but can anyone offer some insight?

Perhaps a foreign volunteer emblem?





I've asked the seller last night for better quality pictures... still no response, but I'm hoping he follows through...

Something along the lines of: "My grandpa shot an enemy soldier during WW2 and brought this back as a souvenir. This helmet means a lot to me, but I'm in a tight spot financially and need to sell it."

The red cross certainly looks Georgian... I'm hoping if and when I get better pictures they'll answer my questions!
