    Original SS rocker clip

Here is a photo of an original on a Plain Tree No. 1 cover. This was not shot with a closeup lens but rather is scanned and enlarged from a photo of the entire cover. It was brought back on a no decal M42 by a 90th Inf. Div. captain.

      Plain Tree No. 1

Here is a photo of the entire cover -- the reverse side and you can see the rocker clip from the back side.

        Another original cover

Here is another original SS helmet cover that was in Chris Bruner's collection in Seattle until his death after which I bought it. Incidentally, a micrometer measurement of the entire clip assembly on this cover and on the previous one on the Plain Tree No. 1 showed them to be identical down to the thousands of an inch. Both covers had clips of annodized aluminum.

If you can get a back issue of "The Military Advisor" for Summer 1992, Vol. 3, Number 3, there is an excellent article, "SS Helmet Covers," by Greg Eigenfeld. It shows an original diagram for the various cloth sections of the cover and excellent large closeup photos of many details including the rocker arms. Eigenfeld included important observations on what to look for in originals and how these differed from fakes being offered at that time.

There was also an article, "Le Couvre-Casque En Toile Bariolee De Camouflage Des Waffen SS," in the French magazine, "Militaria," in the Oct/Nov. 1985 issue however it is entirely in French and the photos don't include as many closeup details as Eigenfeld's article does. The majority of the French photos show overall covers and the different patterns of camouflage.

          Hi guys,

this is getting weird. Just back from Normandy, and in the Bayeux D-Day Memorial Museum they have a SS cammo cover, and guess what? It has stitching that has been pointed out as a fake?

So.. have the museum got a fake in their collection? Funnily enough, I've had 2 well known dealers contact me about the cover I was considering buying and they say it's original! Well known dealers on both sides of the pond! Aarghh... I'm getting confused now!

              lenny.
Early covers had stitching instead of a rivet for the hooks/clips.

              Cheers.

Yes, i appreciate that, but the stitching I mean is the white stitching that goes under the clip. if you know what I mean!

Many museums have reproductions in their displays and in most cases the curator knows this but sometimes they are fooled by crooked dealers.
