The fact that this helmet was in the museum sheds some light on the situation in my opinion. Museums sometimes restore items and it is quite likely this helmet falls into such a category.

There may have been photographic evidence of such insignia painted on helmets and the museum attepted to create one for display. This is quite common from what I've read in museums in the East. With the fall of the Berlin Wall and the end of the Cold War many museums sold off parts of their collection. Hence this example may REPRESENT a partisan helmet while it is in fact only a museum restoration.

      Hello David,

Baer mentions this provenance (army museum, Prague) under the picture of this helmet. The text also mentions the two helmets pictured below offered on the collectors-market. (Baer's german edition, 1994)

        RE: Czech Partisan Stahlhelm

Interesting Thread. TR isn't my hobby area or interest of preference. I sometimes look in for educational purposes. I never expected to be entertained as I have on this occassion.

        David,

I will be in the Czech Republic this July. Interesting what you can learn on these forums. I didn't for example know there was a Military Museum in Prague. Now I do. My mother is Czech, and fluent in the language. She will be with me, as will my German wife. So guess what? I'm gonna borrow your photos, which I know you won't mind, and visit the museum and its Curator, and endeavor to get some answers for you about your helmet, and when and how it happened to leave its former home (and I don't just mean the museum). I'll leave it up to you about sharing what I find out - or not .

        Cheers,
        Michael D. GALLAGHER
