Early and late pattern SS decals

Two weeks ago I almost bought an helmet with and late patern SS decal on the left side (see the thread "left sided SS decal").
I was wondering if somebody could sum up the differences between an early pattern SS runic shield with an late pattern SS runic shield.

The first pattern has a slimmer border. It's sig runes are sharper in it's bend, giving it more angle in it's lighning bolt intent. To me it's more sexier than the 2nd pattern..
The second patern has a thicker black border, it's sig runen has less angle in the lightning bolt effect it is trying to resemble...
Anyone else explain it differently or better?

Thank you guys for your explanation. I know the site www.german-helmets.com and you are right Adrian "a picture speaks a thousand words" but I couldn't find a sum up of the the differences between the two. I thought maybe I was missing something. That's reason why I asked if somebody could sum them up.
