    Interesting photo

I came across this photo, and thought you guys might like to see it, since the helmets there are pretty neat. Look at the officer´s awards and the German soldier using a Russian machine gun on the left.

That's very cool, i don't think i've ever seen him before, be he does look very characteristic and he sure looks like a talented leader. Do you by any chance know the name of the officer? I'm not a badge/award collector, so i've never seen that badge/award pointed out, what is it for?

Infantry combat badge, broken at the right hand side...very cool photo indeed. The PPSH is also not a machine gun but a Submachine gun.

For those interested, you can read about this officer and the circumstances in which these photos were taken here - most highly recommended:

Another well known pic of oberleutnant hanging the PPSH
I'd go for a fieldmade helmet cover with hungarian camo

If you look at the helmet cover he's wearing on the picture Fred posted, you can see it's the exact same cover as the guy on the left on the picture i posted in the beginning. Maybe the soldier was KIA and the officer inherited his gear, now he didn't need his cover and PPSH anymore.

More simple: it's the same man. You can't see his SB on the pics you posted, that's it.

I read in one of the Leaping Horseman books (probably Island of Fire ) that many Heer officers purposely broke their badges like that to show oppostion to the war or some aspect of the handling of the war.

The particular officer w/the broken IAB has been 100% positively ID'd and he either died or disappeared during Russian captivity. There were even wedding photos of him and his bride in the above mentioned book.

                          Definitely not hungarian camo.

You may certainly know better the subject than me, but It remembers me of the hungarian zelt camo (large brown spots on light green, with a few spots of white). Original pic Vs modern pic

IMO the helmet cover is italian camo.
