Thanks for including my original post which, although flippant, was simply a reaction to the buggered state of the decal not a judgement on the helmets originality.

I also understood the post #10 in the way that the present CONDITION of the decal is a heartbreaker today, compared to its former days of glory. It's very often the case, and some think that salty helmets have more character than minty unissued ones. As far as I'm concerned, I love both...

About the decal, I also tend to agree with the KM hypothesis so far (the feldpost number could remove any doubt) ; it was surely denazified, right. But its dimensions are obviously not standard in height ; this point, coupled to the fact that a slight step is visible near the eagle's head - and that the helmet is a reissue - make me think that one decal was put above another one.

Sorry for the number of "maybe" in my post, a good close up will surely make most of them disappear...

RGD 51, would you still say that this helmet sucks if you knew it was Donitz's personal helmet? My point is that it is not only the object that counts; but the history as well. If you want nice decals that dont suck and look there are plenty of fakes for sale.
I think it is a KM decal; they always seem to have that ugly white color underneath when they get damaged.

If you took the time to read my post you would see that my comment was made regarding the unfortunate state of the decal and not the helmet.

I don't think he meant to downplay the helmet as a whole, but rather the state of the decal.

Opinions were asked for, take them how you may, but don't jump all over someone for expressing what was asked.

              Brian,

Jim McCauley, is spot on, the Kriegsmarine decal has been liberated hence the state of the decal. Everything else looks perfectly fine. IMO.

What does salty sea air do to a decal???
Chris, could we test it out on one of your helmets? Place it in a bunker for an extended period of time on a Normandie Beach???

Already tested : here's what does salty air on a helmet (dunno if I'm the Chris you're referrig to, Rolf ? Anyway... ). The whole shell shows little rust bubbles, even under the paint ; the decal didn't resist in a too bad way.<!-- / message --><!-- attachments -->

You can also notice that inside : salted water is terrible for most metallic items.

You're helmet had that distinctive scoring line characteristic of ET's...you really threw me when you said NS!

I encourage everyone to play 'name that shell'...it sharpens your perceptivity especially in regards to the SS helmets. This game , I'm sure, is old hat to some.
