Since the M45-A was found with a late war dark green paint with fine texture, it made sense to me that late M42s were also produced with this color.

1. helmets--documents--no theories needed
2. helmets--no documents--plausible theories
3. no helmets--no documents--only theories
The quote above is essentially claiming that scenario #3 is where the matter stands. I would have to respectfully disagree with Peter and say that scenario #2 is closer to where we find ourselves.
I certainly have the authentic helmets and plausible theories. The 'blurry' photo of the supposed ventless helmet is actually quite clear. The wartime photo (with bundesarchiv #) is itself a document. It appears to document the use of the ventless helmet very late in the war.

Uhhhh, Eric,
Things have changed here somewhat since you have last graced this thread. As I understand it, threads are no longer being locked because certain members/mods disagree with the issues of militaria at hand.
Eric: I must thank you and the forum for providing a worthy crucible of testing for M45. Everything was seemingly done to discredit this helmet and to uphold the central line of thought at the time: "M45 is fake".
The result was that the opposition failed in their mission, and that M45 has been generally accepted into the collecting community as an authentic III Reich piece.Last edited by Brian Ice; 08-12-2007, 10:25 AM.

I have unlocked this thread at Brian's request. I see no need to lock threads because "everything has been said" about a topic. If that is the case, then the thread will die a natural death. That said, if this thread turns personal or nasty in any way, it WILL be locked again. Brian, words like "opposition" and "failed" are not objective. You ALL would be wise to present the facts, discuss rationally and let people decide for themselves

I certainly do appreciate the opportunity and privelege that the WAF helmet forum has provided to respectfully discuss this fascinating topic.
I will do all in my power to follow all forum rules and guidelines and to respect other members. While I respect the views of others, I do not necessarily agree with them. Disagreement does not equal disrespect.
From my point of view, I see no reason why we all can't follow Andy's injunction to keep things respectful.
Eric: I have found that old beliefs can die a hard death. When a person or a group of people become completely convinced of something (in this case that M45 is fake), it can take some time to erase such ideas, even the presence of hard evidence.
