Carrying device, im sure the soldier had something in the belt that he hooked the helmet into.

It resembles the carrying strap, the hook for it is almost at the same place.

I think this is really nice imo, very seldom seen and it really makes this helmet so much nicer

Is that a death date on the helmet? it sure looks like it with the cross.

Then maybe the family of him hunged the helmet on a wall (by that hook) as a family belonging and memory.
