5th Army GI Art Helmet
Man am I digging the GI Art helmets in the collection of RonR!
It's been more than a year since anyone added a "GI Art" helmet to this thread, so I thought I would bump it up by posting my latest acquisition, which turned up at a flea market in New Jersey.
I am quite sure this helmet was given to a member on the staff of the 5th Army, which was commanded by General Mark Clark and fought in the Mediterranean Theater, since it has the 5th Army patch and the patches of its subordinate corps and divisions painted on it.
Besides the 5th Army Corps patch, it has the patches of the IInd Corps, the IVth Corps, and the VIth Corps. It also has the patches of the following divisions: the 3rd Infantry "Rock of the Marne" Division, the 85th "Custer" Infantry Division, the 88th "Blue Devils" Infantry Division, the 10th Mountain Division, the 34th "Red Bull" Infantry Division, the 1st "Old Ironsides" Armored Division, the 92nd "Buffalo Soldiers" Infantry Division, the 45th "Thunderbird" Infantry Division, the 36th "Texas" Infantry Division, and the 91st "Pine Tree" Infantry Division.
Interestingly, the person who painted the helmet took a knife to carefully scratch in outlines of the patches before painting them. After the painting was completed, he lightly lacquered the helmet, which I really like, because it created a crazing effect to the decals and painted patches.
I especially like this helmet because so many units are represented, including my uncle's division, the 88th Infantry Division, the division of one of my best friends (Robert Brooks Jackson, who is now 93), the 45th Infantry Division, and the 92nd Infantry Division, which was made up of African-American soldiers.
This helmet is an all-in-one Mediterranean Theater "GI Art" helmet. Who knows, maybe it was presented to General Clark himself, which can't be ruled out. I also like this helmet because I didn't have a police "GI Art" helmet.
