SD Luft Helmet / Squadron Insignia Horse Head

    Hello,

Another one from our collection. This one was pulled from a house in 1971 in Westmorland NY. Untouched all the way, any idea what squad this would have been??? I've never done any research, but have alwys woundered.

    Thank you
    Tony

This red horse head what a nice tarjet for a sniper !!!
Very nice LW helmet but I think the paint is post war or G.I. Art...

I can not comment on the red horse, but it sure ain't Ferrari.
I had a quick look on the WWII Day By Day site, but came up empty-handed.
Might have overlooked it, so here's a link.

That glossy paint reminds me of Testor's model paint. Looks like a kid painted his school's mascot or something.

This was actually pulled right out of a footlocker we found full of US gear and this. I don't think its model paint by a kid.

Thank you all for the responses.

That insignia bears a striking resemblance to the insignia of the 554th civil engineering squadron heavy repair (Penny short red horse squadron). The Squad' wasn't created until 1965 though.

Whatever it is, it is very obvious the horse was not period applied. The wear to the rest of the helmet compared to the wear of the paint of the horse is not in the least bit similar.

I agree that the horse appears to be a post-war add-on.
