Well guys, it is the old discussion all over again.
Let me say what I think :
- sumpfmuster covers did exist and were worn, there is photographic proof of it.
- so far I have NOT found any proof that they were factory made, so far I have NOT found any proof that they were ONLY FIELDMADE.
- Judging by the construction and the materials used on all the examples I have encountered, one can ASSUME that they were factory made, but again there is no solid proof.
- I believe the two covers in my book are 100% original
Aren't there any copies around then ? Yes there are , for sure.
So it all comes down to your personal "feel" and experience.
There is no magic specific feature to point out that tells you "this is real" or "this is fake"
To my personal experience, the stitching, the cloth, the colors, the overall construction tell all you need to know.
So factory made or field made ?? Does it makes a difference in value TO YOU ?
Why ??
That's the real question you gotta ask yourself.

Hi to all
Interesting debate
but it's amazing to see some peoples here judge the collecting method more than the pieces itself..
Field made or no factory made doesn't signify automaticaly FAKE.
At least the collector itself decide if he want keep this type of piece in his own collection .
That depend to his criteria,knowledge...and feeling
In any case always difficult to be definitively sure....but why not!
The T&W helmet covers are an old debate...
I can't see any reasons why those ones , even in limited quantity ,were not produced.
The lack of period pics proove nothing : until recently, leibermuster, "pirate skull" trap ....wern't illustrated
Thoses one are not to be compared with the cut zeltbahn fake, the camo rayon material is more difficult to find.
Anyway,I have seen in the past some fake items constructed with original camo rayon probably cut from parkas in bad condition with low value
About the cover debating in this thread , difficult (impossible?) to have an opinion , but it's interesting...and disturbing to note the lateral pieces of rayon seems heavily faded and the central band is fresh with vibrant color
IMO , constructed from part of others camo uniforms...WHEN???

I think you should reverse your thinking , why not prove why it's a good one ?
If you only have recently seen a fake one of these you haven't been looking.

Wheres the proof its not real? I have two I beleave to be real. Who was repoping these in the 70S? Ive never seen a fake one till recently! My 2 cents!

I can only agree Werner.
The cover from Edwin on the right side of the pic he presents in a picture was originally purchased as a set with the sniper smock with face veil and RbNr gloves in exact the same cloth and stiched with exact the same material.
The smock was textbook all the way.
Best regards
