This looks like it may be a very good thread, and please accept these two helmets as my contribution. Here's the first from my "Hall of Shame", keeping in the Luftwaffe theme, it appears on an M1934 Edelstahl, and purports to represent a SD Luft parade helmet. I believe that the early light green finish to be authentic, as is the liner, but the decal....yech! I keep it as a reminder of the power of the mind over the gut (feeling that is!!).

the following three images are from a very early mistake of mine. I feel that this is a complete fantasy piece, I knew that the paint was bad STAT (MD lingo for right away). The Hr decal didn't take much longer, but once again the mind prevailed over the GI, and I went for it. I keep it as a training tool to show novice collectors what not to come home with. Image one is the "Tyrol" decal, it has been heat treated to age it (actually the entire helmet bears evidence of spending some time in the oven). I believe this to be a complete fantasy decal. Also notice the camouflage paint. It is modern spray lacquer, found in auto supply stores to touch up auto finishes.

Image 2 of the phony Tyrol M18, this is simply a matt gray on black waterslide, definitely should have known better (actually did), but convinced myself it was good (that doesn't happen much anymore).

Here's the third and final image, this helmet has a decal indicaing use by a Gibirgsjager regiment in the neckguard. Again, heat treated for aging effects. The liner is also heavily marked to this unit in no less that three places in black ink (gothic script).

To make this helmet a somewhat OK M18 was messed up and the liner as well.

I'll check through my records to see if I have any additional photographs of phoney helmets (I generally don't collect SS, so there's a whole lot of images that I can't supply).

Hopefully this thread will grow and be of some help.
