I have been comparing the initial image to the closest example that I have handled. Placing both of them side by side. The example I was using however is from a smooth painted M35 but displays much the same wear. The rougher paint on Perrys image obviously creates different wear pattern.
The dimensions look good geometrically. The thin light outline associated with laquering on the left lower end of the shield is also a good sign.
Others have commented on the lack of depth/substance in the colours which in places appear almost transparently thin. In this area I would like to see more consistancy of colour.
I agree with you Billy, The wear differences that I see is really the difference between the decal being applied to smooth green paint verse M40 style textured paint.
This one I would want hands on inspection. I really don't see any obvious signs from the pictures. (although I think Perry's first picture looks better than the second decal.) I would hope that if this is a fake decal a hands on inspection would identify it.
My guess is that it is ok, until proven otherwise. (not saying I would buy it though )
This had come up once before but a helmet being offered for sale on eBay, not rehashing that but it was to show your not allways going to see a layering effect nor vibrant colors...
Interesting Perry,
Some collectors believe Q decals are typically different than other makers anyway. That is Q decals don't have as vibrant colors and characteristics as the other makers do. I know the SS decals and Heers are different, makes me curious about the others,.
I knew the second one, which is part of a lid offered by Ken N. on his site since a little time now.
Well, some "particular" helmets sold there : a way to say that guts feelings (or call them as you want) are not always good advisers...
Regarding the layering you were speaking of Perry, I have a vet bring back that has scratches in the red portion of the decal and beneath these are an underlying yellow layer (beneath the red). Have you seen this before?
I'm guessing it is the base layer (white) showing that has toned. Like this thread will show some decals will not show a layering effect just looking at pictures and with a close in hand inspection its difficult to see. Decal makers had different quality decals, although the layering I feel may have been a different technique used by different makers, explaining why some show the layering so easy and some dont..
