    Opinions on this M18?

Can anyone give some opinions on this helmet? It seems pretty clean but I'm still learning about these things.

    Thanks,
    Brian

    Hi Brian,
any chance of some close ups? check the top of the dome for any stampings in the metal. That liner does not look good from the photo`s.

The shell and paint are 1,000 % right, the liner 100 % rebuilt with post-war materials... What a pity !
      (BTW, it's a M.16 helmet here ; I would even say a M.17, but some prefer the term M.16 2nd type)

M16/17/18 hmmm. I must admit to confusing these myself from time to time. I always thought the M16s had leather liner bands and pads, the M17s had steel liner bands, and the M18 did away with the old pickelhaube lug/external rivets in favor of bales attached right to the liner. The M17s and 18s often have white leather pads, whereas the earlier ones are typically brown. I agree, the pads on that one look odd...like they have been replaced. Here is the inside of my M oh something or other . This one came out of an estate sale and still has the vet's Mom's address in Allentown Pa written on the front pad and it's original chin strap. Ever notice that a lot of German militaria ended up in Pa? weird. Anyway, this is about what the later white pads would look like. This is about the best condition worn WWI helmet I have found, and it still looks almost 100 years old (which it is)

Chris is right, the shell and rivits are 100% original, the liner appears to be a reproduction. There were many shells like this available after the war.

Thanks for all the info guys!!

I almost made an uneducated move on this helmet. More proof that it is always best to check the forum first!!!

Yes : for the same price, you got a very good sum up of the different models & particularities of german WWI helmets by Andy.

(He just forgot the M.18 with ear cutout, but thas was surely intentionnaly made, just to see a plonka' pointing it out ; so I won't fall in the trap by doing it...)
