They are still out there, 1st Pattern Luft

One week ago I was playing poker with some friends. One person who was friends with the host said, " you collect all that WW2 stuff. I have a DD German helmet my father picked up on the Normandy beach , D-Day plus 2." His wife brought it into work and here it is. The Vet is still alive. The helmet sits in his grandson's room. I gave him some basic backround on the helmet and it is back to the kids room,,,,

    Picture of other side

Here is the other side, there is no liner, just the outer ring.
What is a DD Early Luft worth these days with no liner or chin strap ??

I'm pretty sure he said only the liner band ring remains. If the liner were intact I would have told him a low figure of $1,000 and a high figure of $1500.

              No liner

This helmet only has the outter liner ring. I told the owner not to mess with the pins or try and put a liner in it.I also suggested they get a video of the Vet talking about that day to his grandson.

                Re: First pattern Luft

                Nice helmet !

I picked up a Luft about two months ago. Single decal, no chin strap, and
no liner except it does have the outter band and pins/washers still intact.
In the market right now for a original chin strap. Oh yes, it is a M40.

I notice on the front of that helmets has a narrow arc of missing paint
and I also have that on my helmet but in a wider arc. What would cause this?

that will be caused by other helmets stacked on top, rgds dave

Stacking helmets, which was a common practice, causes this sort of thing as well as scuffing of decals from the bales of the helmet placed above.
