I agree with what the professor wrote, but would like to add a couple of comments:
-The way a helmet will react to stress is very variable depending on the model and nationality of the helmet: US helmets, French helmets, and German helmets dont get damaged in the same way, and mdl 35 helmets dont get damaged like mdl 42 helmets do. I wonder what model of helmet all this testing was done on...
-Although the I agree that the cracks on helmets may be caused by explosions, I am sure that they can be caused by many other phenomenon as well.
For me, these helmets with cracks probably were defective from the start, and were waiting for a "trigger" to crack. The helmet posted by Wolhans actualy does have a small dent if you look carefully, that dent was the trigger.
Considering that the cracked helmets I usualy see have no other apparent damage, I think that the trigger that caused the helmet to crack is most of the time not related to an explosion.
I actualy did hit a german helmet (crappy shell) with a pick axe once. I made one hole and several dents. Over the next weeks, several cracks appeared, related to the dents I had made.

Seems to me like that is an odd way to pass the time.

I would agree with you now, but that was several years ago.
It was a helmet given to me in a deal where older collectors ripped me off, and I somehow transmitted my rage against the collectors onto the helmet.

PS: I have a battle damaged relic shell for sale right now. It has one hole and several dents and cracks: surely a close range artillery hit!! PM me if interested.

Look at the cracked dog tag on the first photo here: http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...262256&page=19
Why is it cracked and not the others? Who knowns, but I doubt it has anything to do with a concussion...
