This is a true story. I bought an SS helmet from a big-shot dealer in Long Beach years ago. No names mentioned. The lacquer on the decal looked too shiny, so I pressed the tip of a toothpick into it at the edge. The lacquer was soft. I took the helmet back and he told me that it's normal for collectors to apply a coat of lacquer over the decal to protect it. Honest! A year earlier he mentioned that you should NEVER wax the paint on a helmet. I said why? He said, "You don't want to know". Go figure.
