Notice where the paint has flaked a little, revealing something white underneath the national shield. What the heck is that?

The adlers black shield has been touched up with paint. The National colors has been repainted, what you see under the paint is what was left of the original National decal.

I thought so too, but would it be white under the area where the red has been repainted? This just doesn't seem like something a soldier would have done. Has anyone else had experience with repaints like this?

The base layer of the National decal will be white.
Touch-ups to decals and painted on decals were done wartime and post-war.

C'mon guys-- over 100 people have looked at this auction, and only two comments. What do you think of the second paint job? It's got texture in in, perhaps sand? Do you think it was an attempt at camo? Also, what are your thoughts on treating the leather? To do or not to do, and if so, what do you find is the best product to use on leather?

Hi. Well I have some thoughts on the helmet. My guess is that the decals are most likely refreshed after the war, if not by the vet himself, perhaps by his nephiew or his kids. Most likely, the national shield, and perhaps even both decals have been overpainted with the second layer of paint during the war. I think it's most likely that someone tried to dig out the decals, and tried to repair them with new paint. (If someone wanted to camoflage their helmet with textured paint, why compromite the whole thing, by painting up the decals in fresh colors?)
I would leave the liner and chinstrap alone and not treat them with anything. It might do damage later on.
Anyway - thats just my thoughts, looking at the pictures (and not paying attention to the story)
                :-)

I'm with Bjorn on this one..... He's right on in my opinion. Any attempt to treat the leather or modify this helmet in any way would take what little value is left there and make it worse. Put it on the shelf and enjoy the novelty of it. Regards, Chris

I agreed with everyone here the helmet decals was touch up after the war, bare in mind, the German who wear the helmet probably have better thing to do "look after his own life" then sitting there painting the decals - my personal opinion.

That's exactly my thoughts too, guys. No matter how much the guy insists that no one touched the helmet after the war, I think that some kid snuck into the closet and played with the helmet. I just wanted to make damn sure that the shields were not done wartime, and you guys have more knowledge in this area than I do. Now, my dilemma is this-- do I remove the paint and expose the real decals (I'm an antique restorer, I can do this with no harm to the helmet), or leave the decals as part of the helmets history? Would the value increase or decrease depending on my actions? If it were yours, what would you do?

I'd try to remove the paint: better to have a no decal or partial decals that those additions.
