    M40 Heer helmet opinion

I would like opinions about this helmet, especially
    1. Is the decal original?

    2. Is the chinstrap a repro?

    3. Is the liner a WWII liner?

This was my first German WWII helmet. I bought it in San Jose California in 1991. My wife was collecting depression glass at that time and I used to go with her to the antique shows. I saw this helmet at that show and decided to collect WWII memorabilia. The shell is an M-40. The shell is solid but has some rust. The decal is in my opinion real, but I always thought that was odd that the eagle is almost all there but the black background is gone. The shell as stamped D 192 inside back and 62 left inside (can’t see a makers letters)

    Thanks for your opinions.

    Juan

It may not be a great helmet, but I like it. It is really salty.

detail of chinstrap. Probably today I will not buy a helmet like this, but I like it.

                        Hi, Juan

This helmet was surely rebuilt with an original early 1st model alu liner ; the chinstrap is wrong, and I don't like the decal very much...
If it's your very first helmet and if it has a sentimental value (this very one decided of the birth of a new hobby and passion), keep it ; at least, it will be the starting point showing the progression in your collection's quality.

My first one was terrible, not even a real combat one, but a post-war repainted Feuerschutzpolizei helmet ; anyway, I would be pleased if it was still here...

Here's a "better" view of the decal, it'll be useful for the others to reply. The "black background" is still there, but hard to distinguish from the dark paint.

Tuff to say for sure as yours pics are kinda blurry. Going just from those I speculate the liner may have been replaced. I can't see the chinstrap good enough to determine. I think the shell and rivets are a match, and the decal looks to be ok..

I don't think there is anything wrong with the decal. Looks like it has just well worn. I agree with the others on the liner and chinstrap.
