This is my favorite hat in my collection. A side-cap for a panzerpioniere.

Now the reason for the braided piping is because Pioneer is black and this way it will show better, is that right?

Yes Perry, that is correct, that is why they used the black/white or black/silver twist like this one. They also used black satouche on the black side-cap. These two types are the only types documented in KNOWN photos, and the only style I believe are original. This satouche was never factory applied, it was done in the field or by the company tailor.
Bob Edwards and Mike Pruetts two books on Panzertruppe document this well with photoes and an original black side-cap with black satouche.
This is a rare cap, and it was vet acquired.

Note: I am always looking to acquire anything related to panzerpioniere: documents, hats, wrappers and especially pictures.
