    SD M40-having doubts

    Hi Everyone:

I just bought this lid at the San Diego Militaria show. I thought it was a Heer but after reading the recent post about a KM M40 am not sure. Sorry to bring this up again.
    http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...threadid=28778

Also after bringing the thing home and taking a closer look at the decal, it seemed to have problems. The application of the decal seems to have been muffed. This seems suspicious.

I'd appreciate any opinions on whether the decal is a fake and if the decal is Heer or KM.

My photography doesn't show it but the decal is goldenish foil like.

For those who missed the thread about yellow Heer vs. KM see

    Thanks

            One more thought

On Chall's KM decal, it looks like the decal is broken on the same spot, mid-left wing but not so bad.

              To be honest, Jack...

...from the pics I can't see anything wrong with this lid, inside or out. In fact it looks to be a super piece. What specifically don't you like about it? The application of original decals was "muffed"
              quite regularly.

Let's wait for some expert opinions...

As the experts are out for a while, I'll take the chance and say that this decal is a 100% right WH one...
Any markings on this brown chinstrap ?

PS : and please, "bring up again" everything you want about KM helmets !

                  Hi Jack,

I agree with the other guys. I see nothing wrong with this one. Looks really good from the pics.

                    DECAL OK

Yes, the decal is a good one. It just doesn't fall into the textbook catagory that everyone's used to seeing. Have several helmets with this decal -- 100% good. Brian Bell

No problem with the decal in my eyes.

Certainly appears to be a Heer decal based on the photos.

                      Nice lid.

                        Much Relief

                        Thanks guys:

I'm much relieved to hear positive opinions. The fact that the decal was broken and an attempt had been made to put it back in alignment raised suspicions. I had heard in these threads somewhere that old brittle decals were applied post war but due to age were not easily applied whole.

Also I could find no maker's mark on the chin strap.

At the SD militaria show, there must have been a hundred or so German helmets for sale and only a handful were not somehow messed with. There were many self made camo helmets. When the sellers saw me sniffing the paint they would smile and they did it them self for re-enactors. Yeah right.

                        Thanks again

Yes, being suspicious is a good thing in this hobby, and it'll be even more the case in the near future, when really good faked decals will appear, and when paints won't smell any more...

But like on the left wing of your decal, problems sometimes happened during decal application, and it's not always a post-war mess...
