I served in the U.S. Army for 7 years. Fortunately never during a time of armed conflict. Three of those years I served in Germany and this gave me an opportunity to wander over various battlefields. Whether it was an ancient battle site or it was one from WW2. I always felt a reverence and respect for soldiers and civilians who fought, died, or just tried to survive during more ghastly times at that site.
I admit I am not a digger. I do have a degree in anthopology (archeology), so I know that some people did professionally for education, reconstruction of historic events. I also know that people dig for profit. There is a huge market in the U.S. for battlefield artifacts from the U.S. Civil War, among others.
Whether you dig or not visiting these historic sites should be done respectfully. If you sell an item you dug, that does not bother me, as long as you are not doing it as a continuos source of income. And please always respect the site and remains of a fallen human being and report it to the authorities.
When I was in Europe before I could not go to historic sites behind the Iron Curtain. I am glad that no longer exists and hope some day to visit places like Stalingrad.
          Thanks and enjoy,
          Norm
