I've owned a number of helmets with rubber ink stamps in the dome but all have either been very feint or smudged. Could anyone tell me what they actually say and were there different types according to the manufacturer and/or arm of service? Also what percentage of helmets received a stamp?

They're acceptance marks, I don't have the exact translation in my memory so I would have to dig through my resources for it...
It's estimated amoungst many collectors that something like one out of every 100 or so were stamped... -
Those stamps usually say :
Abgenommen
Year
Beschaffungsamt für Heer und Marine
Those markings are frequent on early helmets (M.35s) ; the text is sometimes a little different. I'm sorry to say that they are now also faked...Comment

All my original-paint German helmtes /one M40 and two M42/ have dome stamps.
Seems stamps are different types - on my M40 the dome stamp is oval form, on the two "twins" M-42 the dome stamps are somewhat angular form.Comment
