I think the decal is a toned Heer rather than a true gold Kriegsmarine. (I took the pic at a slight angle to avoid reflection from the flash).

Notice the texture and make-up..This is a whitewashed camo and this could still be removed very easy today...

Stephen, you didn't avoid reflection from the flash...

Anyway, yes, it looks like a toned Heer ; the best to take such pictures is natural light.
By the way, nice helmet.
