Have seen that one in the flesh and it is very impressive! If I were a SS helmet collector, I would have to have it.

The wire looks a bit shiny, but no doubt one was over this lid since a lot of time ; maybe replaced ? KM M42's are scarce, I wonder to which point compared to M.35s ; perhaps even more ? No other pics of the decal ?

            Hi Perry,

I don't have a good feeling about this one, strange wire and patina even eagle looks like a repro, do you have a close-up of the decal?

            Cheers,

            Philippe

              zinc coated mesh?

              Hi All
Chris looking closely at that mesh it looks more chalky than shiny . Zinc coated chicken wire will deposit a stain like that when left in contact with steel over a long time , I think it something to do with zinc being cathodic to steel
Is there a close up of the mesh to see if it is a chalky residue?

Yes Sean, you're perhaps right. But I don't like it anyway (I admit it's merely a gut's feeling) : this "particularity" (let's call it this way, as we're waiting for more info), with a "thin" aspect & doubtful patina at the same time doens't give me a very good feeling. I don't say I'd pass on this one if I could handle it on a show, but believe I would look at it very - very - closely.

On the other hand, some people here doesn't have eyes, but telescopes ! Philippe, you have concerns about the decal from here ? Chapeau ! I'd also like to see it more closely.
Dis-moi, could you give me your true feelings about the rarity of KM 1D M.42's, compared to the other models ? Thanks.

Damn, the helmet looks wonderful ; the difference of dirt deposit at he bottom of the helmet compared to the top is killing me : quite logical characteristic thanks to the wire... But well, this chicken still bothers me on this pic as well.
If it's "chalky", I'd say let's go further with this one ; if it's shiny metal, I'd pass.

I just wonder, was it common that a folded part of the chickenwire had the "sharp ends"?

I like that wire, the aging, the galvanized coating turning chalky in spots. I suspect that if we looked at the wire on the top very closely we would see some damage to the twists. I note less chalky residue on top which is good. On the closeup of the twist it has what I like to see on chicken wire. Not sure how I can describe it, but it is sorta reinforced at the start of the twist.

Does Edelweises reply mean that the eagle is bad?
