mint vs. worn
[quote=Chad1;2239284]In my experience, I've seen many more mint/near mint covers than well used examples.
I'm not criticizing the covers already posted here. I think those guys probably know more about them than I do, but I find it funny that they usually seem to be in such nice shape. Where are all the beat rags? Or even moderately dirty examples?
I always thought the splinter cover was so much more rare than the SS covers, but at least you see some torn and faded examples of those.
Maybe covers showing hard use didn't make attractive war souvinirs, but it makes me skeptical, even of covers that are supposedly "right".[/quotGreetings: This,I believe will turn out to be a very informative thread about an item that has to be examined microscopically if necessary to really determine originality. I completely agree with the statement Chad made about how mint splinter pattern covers are surfacing and seem to outnumber period used, worn ones..... or so it seems. The reversal of SS covers. As far as prices go, I also believe this phenomenon and lack of undoubted proof (one lookers)of originality is a big part of holding the prices lower than SS ones.IMO the authentication of SS covers is not as difficult to determine due to the fact the rocker clips that can also be used in conjunction with constuction and material. In the case of splinter covers the only features that can be used is the constuction and material.Since material could possibly still be acquired(mint),we have to apply the most emphasis and concentrate on constuction...especially stitching . I think there should be a thread(if not combined with this one) started to study the CONSTRUCTION of well worn, period used covers. This way the wear would also be a factor to help determine originality. From the mint examples posted, I can definetly see a big difference in constuction techniques, from well fitted and precisely sewn double stitched seams as evident in some,to rather sloppily fitted and rather randomly sewn seams as seen in others. Also the thread used and the weight or thickness of material. Does the material seem too thick on some covers ? I thought covers were made of a one printed side, thinner material(easier fitting and sewing). My thoughts and observations and I'm stickin to'em
Regards
Zeke
