    Fake Decal?

    Hi guys,

I'm fairly sure this decal is fake but I'd just like to get confirmation... Am I right?

    Hello Richard,

IMO I also would say that this is a fake one. I've posted a picture of the decal as shown in a previous thread ( Mod 35 KM ) posted by Santiago. Looks the same to me, lack of detail in claws and body, feather on the left is thinner,...I could be wrong offcourse but I don't like it either. Looks like they tried to make the 'golden color' more darker with a sort of lacker...

Is it possible to post some pictures of the entire helmet? Should this be a KM as wel?

    cheers

    Jan

Just for note Heer and KM decals exist where the fletching is larger on one side and smaller on the other..

I know that these existed, but again this element comes also back in a certain fake. There are also other other points, which makes this decal with smal left fletching a fake, points were originals with the same smal fletching passes

This always seemed to be a give away for me. You can plainly see how the line on the body of bird does not go completely to the shoulder. Its offset. The lines on both sides should be parallel from foot to shoulder.

Ken, there are also fakes which doesn't have this ' offset' and originals that have it!

Here's a picture of an original, you can see clearly that the lines aren't parallel at all, this particular one is showed on german-helmets.com

ps : also note the 'smaller fletching' on the left

I stand corrected. Learn something new everyday. Thanks

Question, The people that I've talked to say that Baer's book is the only one you need. If you have it, it's like the holy grail. If you check it out that's all they have pictured is like what I tried to explain but I turned out to be wrong in my assumption. What other good reference books are out there that cover more info on helmets. I see there is more to learn. I have the Goodapple and Weinand Vol. 1 but it doesn't really tell you diddly. I have the French printed helmet book Le casque allemand coming in along with the Radovic Vol. 2. I also have both issues of Kelly Hick's books. I can get the Goodapple and Weinand Vol. 2 at a $40 price From Ron Weinand. Is it worth it?

If you have the Baer book you have the best book with text/reference on WWII German helmets currently out there.
But the best reference in my opinion is this site. It can add experiance that otherwise would take several years to gain otherwise..

No doubt about this. Books are far more rigid than forums...

I don't like the decal either Rich. Something about this decal doesn't look right to me. Like Jan, I find the thinner feather suspicious.

I agree with you Perry, you learn a lot more on this forum as you do by reading the books. On this forum you learn how to detect the fake decals and helmets. You don't learn that from a book

                            G'day,

I don't like the adler's head it looks like a pimple on a large body.
I too would like to see a picture of the lid.

Would it be possible to have a "sticky" with all the known fake decals already shown in this forum.

                            Regards,
                            Bill

I think a sticky could actually do more harm on fake decals. Most of the easy one's would be harmless but the better ones, a sticky will just tell what needs to be corrected..
