so whats it been painted with to have that sheen after 60+ years out in the elements.i understood they used whitewash not paint to camo thier helmets.what would be the point of painting a helmet with durable paint when you know it would have to come off in time

They painted with what they could find, sometimes whitewash, sometimes white paint. You could always paint your helmet in green again or add on a cover when summer came back... and if you were still alive.
I dont know why this helmet is so shiny, maybe its the flash, and the collector probably added on some kind of crap on the helmet to "preserve it" as so many people do, thinking they are saving history!
Robb, there is no more liner as you can see.

No expert on helmets or paint, but after my years on this earth I've seen what happens to cars and other painted objects that sit out in the weather for long periods and it does change the coloration and tone of the paint. I would think that if this helmet sat out in the elements in the Alps for a lot of years it would change a real white color to a different tone.
Just being the devils advocate here, if in doubt go look at your car if you've had it a few years and see if it's the same color as when you bought it, or if it is it's because you slap alot of wax to it.

                White camo

Since the man that picked it up died 10-15 years ago and he may have had it in his possession for several years, the camo may not have been exposed to the elements for very long. This would account for why the paint wasn't gone.
If someone was going to go to such great lenghts to fake something, wouldn't they fake something that would get them a good return? What would this shell be worth if everyone was in total agreement that it was good? I don't think a faker would spend the time it would take to create this on just a shell.
I think the helmet is totally good.

Like I said before, no money has ever been exchange for this helmet, and it is not for sale, and will not be any times soon.
If it can add any credibility to the story, the original finder died in 1999 I have since found out: he killed himself with a WW2 Mauser rifle, in a bunker up on the battlefields. His familly gave this helmet to one of his digging friends who still has it.

Look at the white paint on the star of this tank: it had been sitting out there for 63 years, though I think the tank may have been upside down untill it was pulled out of the vally.
