    SD Heer M40

Hello all, I usually don't buy helmets, but I have the chance to get one directly from a D-day vet. He wants to know what it's worth and I have no idea. It's a single decal Heer M40, size 62 shell, 55 liner. Good liner and chinstrap. Any thoughts on a fair price would be appreciated. Thanks!

That is a nice, salty helmet. Just like I like them. I would pay $1000 for it.

Nice helmet - I would call this size 62 at $800.

Thanks to all of you who replied! I really want to save this helmet because it belongs to a local D-day vet so it has a great history to it. I have posted another helmet, a M35, that I need a fair price estimate on so I can get this helmet. Thanks again!

I defer to RichB and Jim on the price, I may have been overly enthusiastic with my estimate. I do like nice, salty helmets like this one, though!

I think for a size 62 in this condition I would expect to pay $750. max.

$800-900 range would be fair market value in my opinion...

I'm still working on getting the helmet, but here's some history I know so far. The soldier who brought it back entered service in 1943, transportation corps. He was sent to England and assigned to a Port Company that was in charge of off-loading supplies on the invasion beaches. He was on Omaha Beach on June 6th or 7th (D+1) setting up the supply port. Most of the items he brought back were coastal arty items, which makes sense as he spent several months on the coast before moving into France. He returned home in December 1945.

I picked up the M40 yesterday, and I talked to the vet about it today. He says it came from Le Harve, France in a trade from a Free French soldier who wanted American cigarettes. Here's the decal:
