Hello:
This pattern runic shield tries to mimic the "Austrian" pattern rune shield or CA Pocher. However, it is badly rendered. Kelly Hicks would classify this as an Italian variant (imitation) due to the exaggerated roundness and cut of the shield/ rune, respectively. Thus, I would say this is an imitation shield.
Side Note: I've seen these all over Europe and most collectors I know would consider this shield an imitation. And I know of no other evidence to the contrary.

J

Thanks folks for your comments, I have no experience of these and doing a little research I see what you mean, the bottom of the shield is quite rounded compared to the original ones in the gallery on German Helm Inc. The ageing of the decal in line with the helmet, rust etc looks right, convincing.
thanks
Mark

Actually, I'm not totally convinced about the roundness of the bottom of the shield as a valid indicator that it is imitation. Many collectors will say that... if a shield is rounded on the bottom then it is an imitation shield. Further, in Kelly Hick's book, he shows no decals that conforms to round bottoms. HOWEVER, if you look on e-stand right now you will see a M42 with a round bottom shield that seems to have the thumbs up... well it looks round. And if you look at Tom Kibler's book, Combat Helmets p. 62 he shows a round bottom shield. In addition, I have seem many round bottom examples that seem very convincing. So round bottom SS rune shields may be actually Ok. IMO, the issue with this rune is more directly related to the shape and measurements of the runes in the shield and the construction of the shield in general. The shield does not look of quality.
Note: Be advised that my opinion is based on this pic. Maybe someone else can provide a better opinion and analysis than I presented.
Regards,
Jim
