Its probably true about the stuff on the leather drying out with time. I know a guy, who every 6 months or whatever takes all his helmets and puts some kind of crap on them so they dont rust, and he also puts "beef foot oil" on the leather works.
I dont suspect the stuff will stay impregnated in the leather for ever, it will have to dry out some day, probably after a few years. You should ask a chemist, like Kai Stefen...

At the end of the day though, its still an original in an ocean of crap. That means a lot

I guessed vaseline as it leaves leather looking wet and bright. I'm not sure about Pecards, anyone out there use it?

Yes it is a rare helmet but a untouched one is rarer. Should have added that one to the list..
I'm not trying to talk you out of the helmet by no means Ty. It's a real SS helmet. It's just not going to be at that "upper crust" level. The helmets that push the envelope of pricing and desirability...

If it's pecards leather restorer it should lighten up some, but not entirely. If it was extremely dried out there was probably no other option other to have no liner left in a few years.

I think when I get the helmet I'll just pull that old nasty liner out and put new one in. Maybe put a nice party shield on the other side too.

I don't have it yet. still negotiating (with my wife)

                  Hi,

Yes I know, I almost bought this helmet it was on a auction at epier. The seller and I made an agreement and would sell the helmet to me. But the morning after (I was at work), a well known helmet collector/writer pressed that damn 'buy it now' button.

Ty congrats, I will change my avatar ok?

I finally have this helmet. I'm happy to say the left decal was definitely a party shield making this a WSS DD M-40. Under a loop you can clearly see a few remains of the red in the party shield. Not many pieces left but certainly enough to tell. So glad that trooper decided to leave such a little bit.
Unfortunately the liner has definitely been treated recently with what appears to be pecards. Although the liner doesn't appear that it needed it. I managed to wipe some of it away from the liner, it must have just been applied.

I'll try to get a picture of the magnification.

If you can tell it's a party shield then that is killer! The rarest WSS helmet...
Can you give us new pics all the way around?

                          Congratulations Ty!

I just discovered that you now own this beauty! That's great
that it is an original issue Waffen-SS and not a Heer reissue as
I suspected. Either way a gorgeous centerpiece!
