Looking at this one again I believe we have discussed this already. That scraped decal rings a bell or two...I thought it might have been a party shield and Perry thought it was perhaps an old Heer adler.

If I'm not mistaken, Mrs. Weinand was selling this not so long ago. Still a nice helmet (especially in the big size) but the liner has definitely been oiled, affecting value to a degree.

Yes,the liner's been treated.

You can see the wax or grease in the holes. I'm not quite as
discerning as some collectors, so with a helmet as nice as this,
I could ignore this transgression. I would try to remove it very carefully, though.

Does anybody else feel that this could have been a reissued
Heer?

If it was the slate grey Polizei/SS color and a 1st pattern I would lean more towards a Party shield. Reason being this is the most likely scenerio in my opinion but with just traces could go either way. With only traces you have to go with what's most likely..

Does anyone have any experience with removing liner oil or treatment. That would make me very nervous. It seems that many helmets coming from old collections have been treated. Maybe because it wasn't thought as a bad thing 30 years ago ??

Hi, Ty - Lucky Dog!

I'd think long and hard about it. If I did anything I'd probably
just rub it very lightly with a clean cotton cloth to get the excess
off. Maybe Q-tip swabs to clean the holes. The "damage" is
done so nothing will undo it. Don't do anything brash, you'll
regret it the rest of your days.

Yes, alot of helmets from old collection have been cleaned, furniture polished and leather treated. Many collectors back then didn't know better and still do it today. It looks to be heavy so first you need to get the collector to tell you what it is. My bet is it's vaseline..

Yes it is the very helmet you posted earlier (which I mentioned above) but I think a few here have missed that point altogether and are discussing this as if it's a "new" find.

BTW, why didn't you buy it?...it sold for a great price.

Nice helmet Ty. A shame about the liner, but I'm not as much of a purist as some I guess. With a rare helmet like this, I don't think it makes that much difference.

Yes it is a nice SS helmet but the treated liner does affect the value and desirability of the helmet. Saying it doesn't is saying it's as desirable as a untouched one. That's just not true. One that has not been treated heavily or cleaned in same conditions will greatly out-perform the one that has been messed with. It's a nice real SS helmet but it will not bring what a untouched one will...

I'm told that this is that pecards stuff. I've been told it doesn't damage the liner long term and drys to the liners orginal condition over a period of months or years. Not sure how true that is. Personally, I haven't used it and would prefer one without it. Let me get this and we'll see just how it looks.

I agree that a treated or cleaned liner does decrease the value but the amount of devalue is of personal opinion. I would have no problem with this in my collection and wouldn't expect it to decrease the value more than 10-20%. Agree, there is nothing better than one never touched.

didn't mean just the dollars and cents...you are right there. I'm talking about it's value to a serious collector as a rare object. It is what it is, and is still a super addition to a collection. "Out perform" ...you sound like you are turning into a stock broker on me Perry
