Helmet Fest..

I have been on the hunt for period pics of "vibrant" camos, moreso to determine application of camouflage - where, why, how etc. Kursk at GDC posted this pic of 2 Canadian soldiers with one helluva lotta helmets. There are many styles but what caught my eye are some of the camo painted helmets. Would love to see this in color! many styles of camo helmets, including some that appear from tone and hue of this greyscale photo to make use of countershading, disruption and concealment.

Anyway, thought I would post it with apologies to Kursk from GDC.

Note that 10 to 15% of those helmets are camo's...... Mostly dot or "Turtle" camo types. Regards, Chris

There are a couple of what appear to be tan, as well as one behind the back of the soldier leaning over that is very unusual in pattern.
There is also one that appears almost to be a very light color but not tan. Could be from the flash however.
Very surprised at the number of camos, perhaps one of the units that surrendered and turned in their gear wore a large number of camo painted helmets as some units did?

Fantastic picture......not only is it remarkable how many camos are in the picture, but also the lufty eagles ! .......also a tri-colour national decal, a rarity as they were supposed to have been scratched by the time the allies got near them !

Good point maybe some the dark liners we have are not post war treated after all.

Very interesting, Personally I have never held with the 'if it's black, send it back' theory........I bet many were darkened by sweat and dirt. Also the fashion for hair oil, including olive oil ! not to mention these poor chaps often were not in a position to wash their hair that often. I bet liners got blackened a lot.....add to that 60 post war years, I can see no mystery in black leather.

very interesting observation. leads me to believe that perhaps some of the dark liners we think were post war treated with oil and such are maybe just originals in that condition, completely untreated, just well soaked in sweat and dirt.

I like the variety of camo helmets, it has helped me understand the variety of styles and seeing other period photos as well. Many different kinds here, covers, wires, camos, double decal lw helmets.
It would be interesting to know if these helmets come from "far and wide" or if a particular unit/division surrendered, LW field division for instance, or Flak brigade, and these are their spoils. Esp with reference to the camo helmets!
