Hello all, I have a question for all of you Helmet guys. Please help me if you will, and thank you if you can. I have a M-35 Helmet that I have had for over 20 years. It has a nice Original Strap and Liner. However someone has painted it with Rattle can Black paint. On the inside of the left lower part it has the letters:EISE. On the inside of the lower rear part it has the numbers: 12991. What do these Letters and Numbers mean? The paint looks like it can be removed with a light brushing with Acetone. What are your Opinions? Thanks again! Butch

Hi, being post war painted black has significantly devalued it. I have used acetone to remove a large and thick paint deposit picked up by a helmet stored in someones garage. the Acetone did work, it didn't have an effect on the original factory paint, but I didn't have to deal with decal issues. My advice would be try acetone on a small area at a time and don't rush it, do small areas each time if it seems to be working.

I agree with the above., but would add that if you suspect decals to be present, approach those areas with fingernail polish remover, which is a weakend form of acetone. Use cotton balls or Q-tips on the decal area and go slowly as it can also destroy decals if applied too heavily and rubbed to strongly. Have a supply of water handy to flood the area if it appears that damage is being done. Rinse the whole helmet off throughly with water after you are done. I have had great success with this in the past and have recovered the original finish on several helmets......

Helmet
Thanks for all the advice Fellas! That Helmet and I have been "friends" for a long time. I've had it for almost 30 years.I bought it at a friend of mine's Chopper "Motorcycle" shop. It struck me that it was in such good shape and that it had such a nice Liner and chinstrap. I've been down before where I was forced to sell some of my stuff due to financial woes, but I always hung on to my Helmet. I feel so lucky to have it. I see the prices of the helmets nowadays, and I feel just that much more lucky...I paid $25.00 for it. Years after I bought it, I used to keep it on a shelf behind the counter at my own Motorcycle shop as a Conversation piece. I was working late one night and after I closed up the shop my truck wouldn't start. No problem, I'll take my Bike. Then it occured to me that I had let a customer borrow my helmet to get his bike home. I snatched the Ol' M35 off the shelf and off I went into the night. About half way home I was wondering how in the world the Germans wore those things while riding Motorcycles every day!!?? Not Comfortable at all. But it's a cool Ol Helmet and I love it. Thanks again for all the help guys! Butch
